Plan For Your Marriage—Not Just The Wedding

6 Ways To Go Beyond Just a Nice Start

Comments … Email Print

By Gail Andersen

Getting married is an incredibly monumental event for every girl. It’s something she most likely thinks about and plans for a long time. And when she meets the man of her dreams, all she can think of is that magical moment that she will tie the knot forever.

In her eyes, the man she is about spend the rest of her life with can do no wrong. He is perfect in every way. The little bumps they have hit during dating are nothing to be concerned about. They will live happily ever after.

A Simple, Convenient Home Salad Bar That Lasts All Week

Create Amazing Salads In 90 Seconds Or Less

Even if you aren’t a plants-only eater like me, you’ve probably been convinced of the value of eating more vegetables. You may also enjoy a great salad bar when eating out and would eat more salads at home if it were easier and not so time and labor intensive.

I get that. Dr. Joel Fuhrman, author of Eat To Live, recommends making your salad the main course of your meal. While I loved the idea of that when I first read it, all I could think about is how much time and work it would take me every meal.

The Power Of Golden Rule Living

How To Impact Your World With This Behavioral Shift

Comments … Email Print

Even though most tip their hat to the idea of playing nice, so much of human behavior is self-centered. It’s why we say, “It’s a dog-eat-dog world.” “You have to look out for #1.” “Don’t get over it; get even.”

Looking out for myself even at expense of others. Getting even, responding in like kind. Those tend to be the governing principles that guide our personal and business relationships.

And it doesn’t work. Unless, of course, you don’t give a rip about others.

Creating a Loving, Nurturing Home Without Becoming Child-Centered

How To Create A Family Focused On The Benefit Of Everyone

Comments … Email Print

In 1979, a proclamation was signed to declare that year as the International Year of the Child. The motivation was to draw attention to the problems that affected children around the world. While this motivation is very admirable, there has been a swing since then to focus on the needs of the child above the needs of the family as a whole. This has created more families that are child-centered, which is not necessarily a good thing.

At that time, I was at Iowa State University studying Child Development. I loved children, and had focused so much during my formative years on caring for and teaching siblings, neighbors, and other children at child care centers. So why would I not agree with centering so much attention on children as a whole?

How I’m Choosing To Cast My Vote

Why I'm Voting—And How (Not Who)

Every presidential election is a big deal. Some are bigger than others—this is one of them.

I’m not super excited about the candidates but I haven’t been for the last few elections. I miss that—it’s nice to be really excited about a candidate.

How To Win A Fight With Your Spouse

Caution: You Might Have To Change Your Definition Of Winning

Comments … Email Print

Put any two people under the same roof for a while and eventually they’re going to have a disagreement. So when a man and a woman decide to marry and join together all that they are and all that they have, it’s only a matter of time before a disagreement erupts.

We tend to call it a fight. Mainly because that’s what it becomes—less about finding a mutually beneficial option and more about getting your own way. And often causing a great deal of hurt.

Bringing Out The Best In Your Spouse

5 Ways To Change Your Perspective And Words

Comments … Email Print

By Gail Andersen

Married couples have the potential to enjoy the very closest of relationships. But with that close relationship comes an awareness of the bad as well as the good. And our tendency so often is to focus on the negative rather than the positive.

We do it with our children, too, and we know it’s not good. But it’s even more detrimental in a marriage.

People Take Your Word Seriously—So Should You

Under Promise. Over Deliver.

Comments … Email Print

If you’re genuinely interested in building great relationships with others—personally or in business—you must be motivated out of a desire to serve others. Yet even with the most sincere of motives, there’s a danger of making promises that you can’t—or just don’t—keep.

Show Support To Our Men And Women In Blue

This post is a bit of a deviation from my norm. Not directly about parenting, marriage, personal development, or health. Yet I believe it’s a subject that will very definitely impact our families and communities. I want to challenge you to show some extraordinary support to our police—the men and women in blue.

We’ve had a bad run of news lately. Outrageous acts of violence throughout communities in our country. Accusations of police brutality—some unfortunately valid; others proven false.

Homeschooling With Toddlers In The Household

Preserving Schedule And Sanity In Your Home School

Since we had five children that were homeschooled—and very close in age—we had many a year when toddlers were part of our homeschool experience. Typically, toddlers are active, demanding, and have a short attention span.
