Teaching Kids To Fight For The Bottom

Learning To Win By Preferring Others

Comments … Email Print

By Gail Andersen

I have long since forgotten where I heard this phrase—it may have been Zig Ziglar—but, “fight for the bottom”, has been used in our family for years and is now being quoted by my grandchildren. It has diffused many arguments in our household, and it has the capacity to do that for yours as well.

When a child is born, he knows nothing other than himself. He has very few needs—to be fed, changed, or put to sleep—but those needs are immediate, and they become the central focus of a household. Babies don’t know how to wait. And the only way they know to make their needs known is by crying.

What Do You Look For In A Prospective Spouse?

10 Top Qualities Beyond Physical Attractiveness

Comments … Email Print

In his book, The Millionaire Mind, Thomas Stanley says, “Why are millionaires millionaires? Because they made the right decisions concerning several major issues in their life, and one of these is choice of spouse.”

I recently wrote on how a supportive spouse, among other benefits, can increase your financial success. The biblical book of Proverbs says,

He who finds a wife finds a good thing, And obtains favor from the Lord.” Proverbs 18:22

Don’t Read Or Believe Food Packaging—Except This

The Only Two Sections You Should Read

Comments … Email Print

The best diet consists of whole foods prepared by you or for you. When purchased at a farmer’s market or the produce section in your grocery store, they generally don’t come with any labels or packaging.

When you purchase any food that has already been processed, it’s going to be packaged in some way. The packaging material provides preservation as well as convenient handling. But it also provides for something else—marketing.

Keeping Your Kids Busy Over Summer Break

A Few Boundaries And A Bit Of Direction Go A Long Way

Comments … Email Print

By Gail Andersen

Since I homeschooled, my children were used to being home every day. And yet, when summertime came, they too experienced the lack of direction that traditional school children do.

Learning To Speak “I” Language

Making A Point Without Starting A Fight

Comments … Email Print

Sir Isaac Newton once said, “Tact is making a point without making an enemy.” Most of us have worked hard to make a point yet only to stir up an argument or damage a relationship in the process.

One of the best skills I learned years ago at a marriage workshop was how to speak “I” language. It’s a language that’s easy to understand but it takes some effort to become proficient because it’s so counter-intuitive.

Fair Doesn’t Always Mean Equal

Comments … Email Print

By Gail Andersen

Do you consider it to be fair if every child in your family has the same responsibilities as well as privileges?

Of course not! What you expect from a 12-year-old would not be the same as what you would expect from a 1-year-old. And the privileges that you give a 16-year-old would not be those you’d give to an 8-year-old. That seems easy enough to answer.

5 Ways To Get Along With Others Better

Comments … Email Print

I’ve shared why the life skill of getting along with other people is such a necessity to succeed in anything of importance. To get where you want to be in life will ultimately require the help of someone else.

The best place to learn this life skill is in the home. Unfortunately, many didn’t have a good example of this in their home while growing up. If you feel you got short-changed on practical training in this area, here are five ways you can become better at your people skills.

Helping Kids Process The Death Of A Loved One

Comments … Email Print

I’m concerned that people are less equipped to deal with death today than ever before. Because it’s painful, so much of what happens when a person dies takes place behind the scenes. It’s a stark contrast to just decades ago when a family member who’d died would lie in state in the parlor of the family home before burial.

I’m not suggesting we return to that, but I do feel that death is a part of life. And we owe it to our kids to help them learn to process death in a healthy way.

Take Family Vacations—Even If You Think You Can’t Afford Them

Creating Treasured Memories Doesn't Have To Be Expensive

Comments … Email Print

By Gail Andersen

When I was a child, our family rarely took vacations. I grew up in an unusual family with six children, three of them having special needs. That alone discouraged my parents from taking us all on trips. But in addition to that, it was common in those days to just cash in the vacation days for family needs rather than using the funds to travel.

Over the years, I remember a few times going to our grandparents cabin up north, but those times were few and far between. I have fond memories of those trips, and wish there would have been more of them. But I understand how difficult those trips were for my parents.
