Thank You!
I greatly enjoyed sharing with you recently the things that made the biggest difference in raising our kids and have given us the rich family relationships and culture we enjoy today. If I could advise my younger self on how to build the family I wanted—knowing what I know now—these would be at the top of list.
Highlights
- Love their mom.: Nothing creates more security in a child than a strong, loving marriage.
-
Spend regular time with your kids one-on-one.: We called it “special time”. Spend one hour with one child every week on a rotating basis. The purpose of Special Time is keep the relationship close enough so you can speak into their lives as necessary.
-
Teach your kids to love and respect each other.: If you expect your kids to learn to love and respect others, it needs to start among themselves. Golden Rule living is best caught at home.
-
Help each child to discover and appreciate his/her purpose.: God creates each of us on purpose, for a purpose. You brought them into this world. You need to help them discover the why.
-
Create family spirit.: Every great sports team works hard to build team spirit—so should families.
-
Know when to move from control to coaching. I believe in keeping young children on a “short leash.” It’s vital for their protection and training. However, it’s also vital to know when to lengthen that leash and help them become good decision-makers. Teach your children not just what to do, but the why. The life principles are what will sustain them.
-
Teach your kids to love and serve God. It’s your job to point them to their Creator so that they can hit the mark for which they were created.
