My sister-in-law is with us this weekend and today is her birthday. Birthdays are a big deal in our home. We have quite a few family traditions; e.g., singing. We sing Happy Birthday a lot. We sing while bringing presents out to the birthday person in the morning. We sing before each meal. We sing after supper when we bring out the cake. It’s a little nuts but we love it.
Another important tradition is The Special Today Red Plate - aka, simply The Special Plate. A big red plate that says, “You are special today” around the edge. The person of honor uses The Special Plate all day. With twins in our home, we need to have two Special Plates.
Some may think it’s corny but we think it’s great. People generally don’t get too much affirmation. Family is the place where a person should be able to count on affirmation and encouragement. Anything that provides those is a good thing.
We don’t restrict The Special Plate to just birthdays, yet we don’t overuse it either. After all, it’s supposed to be special. If you’re always looking for ways to add to your family traditions and/or ways to build each other up, I recommend The Special Plate.
What ways does your family show affirmation?
