I received an award today by our local Optimists Club - the Friend of Youth award. Each year they recognize someone’s effort in the community for youth work. I was recognized because of the impact of our Oneighty youth ministry. We became a Oneighty affiliate (originating from Church On The Move in Tulsa, OK) eight years ago. Our first night we had 14 teenagers. In one month, 50. In one year, over 100 at our Wednesday evening service.
After 2 years, we acquired a 20,000 square foot former grocery store and renovated it - a 280 seat auditorium and 10,000 square feet of game areas and cafe. Most of the youth that attend each Wednesday don’t attend our church - or any church for that matter.
I was honored to receive the award - on behalf of all those who made Oneighty a reality. God always places a vision in the heart of one person, yet a God-size vision always takes a team. So, I got the award; but, I let the group know I was just the figurehead. It took a church of committed people and others in our community to make the vision happen through giving their time and money.
Nothing worthwhile was ever accomplished by one person. It takes a team. This Sunday, I’ll share the award with my church.
