I’ve taken Mondays off for 28 years - ever since I’ve been involved in ministry in the local church. They have always been my sabbath day of rest. Not everybody knows how to use a day off for recharging. Many make the mistake of simply doing nothing - sleeping in, wandering around aimlessly, watching hours of mindless TV.
I’m all for getting plenty of sleep, don’t get me wrong. Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is take a good, long nap. The mistake I’m referring to is not strategically choosing activities that actually recharge your physical and emotional batteries.
Think for a moment. What really recharges you? What would you choose to do if you had 2 hours of uninterrupted time with no demands from anyone? Maybe it would be exercising; reading fiction ; gardening. Give me 2 hours to do whatever, and I’m either Barnes & Noble or the library browsing whatever resources interest me at the moment - preferably with a great cup of coffee. Or, researching something on the web at my favorite coffee shop.
My point is…strategically choose something to do one day a week that really recharges you. Build it into your schedule. Get your family’s agreement to allow you that luxury and encourage them to do the same. You will all be glad you did.
How have you learned to make weekly recharging a priority?
