How Do You Connect With God Best?

April 7th, 2008 · No Comments · Whatever

Sacred Pathways Not everybody connects with God in the same way. That shouldn’t be a shock since He’s created each of us unique with a different mix of gifts, passions, abilities, personalities, and experiences. Yet, too often people will try to make another’s spiritual practice their own or worse, try to impose their own practice onto another.

The book, Sacred Pathways, by Gary Thomas was extremely helpful to me in understanding how I connected with God best - and be excited about it. It identifies nine different pathways others have used throughout time to connect with God according to their individual temperament.

For example, I’ve tried the quiet time in my study. It’s okay, yet it’s nothing compared to the prayer times I have when walking through nature in a secluded woods or beach or field. That’s because my pathway is that of a naturalist. When I startle a few deer that run across the snowy field or see the first red-winged blackbird of the spring, it is a deeply spiritual experience for me.

You may feel closest to God while involved in deep study. Or perhaps in solitude; maybe while journaling. Whatever your pathway is, you owe it to yourself to find it, celebrate it, and incorporate it into your recharging routine.

What have you discovered as the best way for you to connect with God?
