A Big Step Toward Better Health

April 2nd, 2008 · 3 Comments · Exercise, Health, Nutrition

On New Year’s Day I was the heaviest I’d ever been; generally tired; felt like I’d get injured doing the simplest thing. I couldn’t blame anyone else. Like Zig Ziglar said, “I never accidentally ate anything.” I was so sedentary. Wasn’t like me. I knew what I needed to do, yet…the biggest step toward better health is the first one.

I ran across Gov. Mike Huckabee’s book, Quit Digging Your Grave With A Knife And Fork: A 12-Stop Program to End Bad Habits and Begin a Healthy Lifestyle. It’s the story of how Gov. Huckabee lost 110 pounds in one year to avoid serious health consequences. An easy, enjoyable, and motivational read. Nothing all that new or profound but just what I needed to take that first, big step in making some lifestyle adjustments for better health.

3 months later, I’m fifteen pounds lighter and still losing. I’ve got plenty of energy and less stress. My clothes fit better. My one-pack has become a 4-pack. And my wife likes the more fit-looking me - and that’s after I quit the health club! I’ve even signed up for the summer softball team.

I’ll write more later about some of the changes I’ve made. But it all started with one step. If you need to take that step, I recommend Huckabee’s book.

What has helped you make some tough lifestyle changes toward better health?

    Pastor Kirby-

This was a great message. And nice to know that even the best get lazy sometimes! ;)

I know how into technology you are - you should check out Nike+ shoes. They send a signal to your iPod Nano and tracks your runs and walks by satellite. They give you feedback including number of calories burned, distance, speed, and time. There’s even a voiceover during the music that reminds you of how far you have to go. It’s pretty cool.

Staying fit is a key to avoiding colon cancer. And colon cancer is the only fully avoidable cancer. Kudos to you for making changes!

Nike+ shoes, huh? Man, I’m on it. Thanks for the lead, Kate!
